CAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WEEKLY REPORT (MARCH 9)
RICHMOND, Va. (March 9, 2015) - William & Mary senior Jazmen Boone and James Madison junior Angela Mickens were named Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Women's Basketball Players of the Week, while Elon's Shay Burnett won the Rookie of the Week nod for the fourth time this season, the conference announced on Monday.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK:
Jazmen Boone | William & Mary
Senior | Guard/Forward | Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne
Senior Jazmen Boone nearly pulled off program history by recording the first Tribe triple-double on Wednesday night as W&M secured a bye and a date with third-seeded Hofstra. Boone added 16 points, grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds, and fell one assist shy of the triple double (9). She added a theft in the contest as well. Through the regular season, Boone averaged 12.0 points, 6.3 boards and 3.3 assists per contest. On top of that, she's also scored in double-digit figures 20 times and notched five double-doubles as well.
Angela Mickens | James Madison
Junior | Guard | Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee
Junior Angela Mickens also came close to completing a triple-double last week, scoring 10 points to go with 11 rebounds and nine assists against the College of Charleston. She shot 50 percent from the floor (3-of-6), including a 3-pointer, and 75 percent from the free-throw line (3-of-4). This season alone, the junior is responsible for 221 assists, which ranks second on JMU single-season assists chart – just 3 away from the all-time record. Amazingly, Mickens already has dished out 413 assists for her career, good for eighth all-time.
Shay Burnett | Elon
Freshman | Guard | Graham, N.C./Southern Alamance
Guard Shay Burnett, who has won CAA Rookie of the Week honors four times this season, led Elon to an exciting 77-76 overtime victory against Delaware last week in Alumni Gym. The freshman netted a team-high 19 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field (46 percent) including 2-of-3 from behind the arc. She also went 5-of-6 from the charity stripe (83 percent), grabbed five rebounds, and handed out a game-high five assists. After the Graham, N.C., native hit two free throws to put Elon up at the end of regulation, she scored six of Elon’s 10 points in overtime.
