PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Bianca Calderone • Northeastern
Sr., Defender, Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley
Calderone scored a game-winning goal and anchored a defense that posted consecutive shutouts in Northeastern’s 1-0-1 week. The senior defender finished off a corner kick in the 85th minute for the third goal of her career as the Huskies knocked off regionally ranked Boston University 1-0 on the road. She also helped NU post its sixth shutout in eight matches with a 0-0 draw against UMass.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Aly Shaughnessy • William & Mary
Sr., Midfielder, Haymarket, Va./Battlefield
Shaughnessy scored three goals as William & Mary posted victories over Richmond (4-1) and Penn (3-0) last week. The senior recorded her first career multi-goal game by scoring once in each half against the Spiders and gave the Tribe a 2-0 advantage with a goal in the 15th minute at Penn. Shaughnessy is tied for the team lead in goals (3) and points (7) this season.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK:
Serenity Waters • UNCW
Fr., Midfielder, Sharpsburg, Ga./East Coweta
Waters recorded a hat trick with three first-half goals as UNCW rolled past Francis Marion 8-0 last Saturday. The freshman midfielder found the net three times in less than 10 minutes and just missed the school record of four goals in a game. Waters leads UNCW with 14 shots this season and is second on the team with four goals.
THREE CAA TEAMS AMONG TOP 10 IN REGIONAL RANKINGS: Three CAA teams were listed among the top 10 in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional rankings released on Sept. 9. James Madison was ranked #1 in the poll, followed by Hofstra at #8 and Northeastern at #9. A new poll will be released on Tuesday.
HOFSTRA UPSETS DUKE: Hofstra upset ACC member Duke 2-1 in the opening game of the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic last Friday but was beaten 3-1 by 2nd-ranked Virginia on Sunday. Sophomore forward Jill Mulholland scored the game-winning goal against the Blue Devils with just 2:56 left on the clock. It was her fourth goal of the year. Senior Sam Scolarici scored her league-leading eighth goal of the season in the 62nd minute to put the Pride up 1-0 on Duke. Scolarici now has 88 career points, which is one shy of the school record. Junior Leah Galton scored her fifth goal of the season to pull Hofstra into a 1-1 tie with Virginia in the 53rd minute. Galton, Mulholland and freshman defender Kristen Desmond were chosen to the all-tournament team.
