WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (November 1, 2012) -
William & Mary senior midfielder Mallory Schaffer was selected as
the Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer Player of the Year for the
second consecutive season in voting by the league's head coaches. The award was
presented Thursday night on the eve of the semifinals of the CAA Women's Soccer
Championship in Williamsburg, Va.
Also receiving top women's soccer honors
from the conference were Drexel
sophomore goalkeeper Eve Badana as CAA Defensive Player of the Year,
Hofstra freshman forward Leah Galton as CAA Rookie of the Year and
Drexel's Ray Goon as CAA Coach of the Year.
Schaffer led William & Mary and
ranked third in the CAA in goals (10) and points (23) despite often being the
focus of opposing defenses. She contributed a goal or an assist in 10 of the
Tribe's 19 contests and recorded game-winning goals in road victories at Auburn
and Villanova. A three-time first-team all-conference honoree, Schaffer is just
the fourth player in CAA history to earn multiple Player of the Year awards,
joining former W&M players Natalie Neaton (1993, 1995), Missy Wycinsky
(1998-99) and Claire Zimmeck (2006-07). Schaffer received first-team
All-America and Academic All-America accolades in 2011 and is currently one of
10 national finalists for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award.
Badana anchored a Drexel defense that
allowed a league-low 12 goals in 18 matches this season. The sophomore
goalkeeper led the CAA and ranked 29th nationally with a 0.67 goals
against average and was third in the conference with an .836 save percentage.
Badana topped the CAA and set a Drexel season record with 10 shutouts, six of
which came in league play. She made 61 saves, which included eight games with
at least four stops.
Galton was one of the CAA's top
offensive threats in her first collegiate season. The freshman forward led the
Pride and ranked second in the CAA in goals (11) and points (26). Eight of her
11 goals came in conference play, including multiple-goal performances against
Georgia State, Delaware and Northeastern. Galton, who is the first Hofstra
player to receive Rookie of the Year honors since 2005, was also selected to
the All-CAA first team.
Goon guided Drexel to its best season
in school history with a 13-3-2 overall record. The Dragons earned a berth in
the CAA Women's Soccer Championship for the first time after finishing second
with a 7-2-1 league mark. Drexel shattered school records for overall wins, CAA
wins and road victories (7) in a season. The Dragons also extended their home
unbeaten streak to 15 games (11-0-4), which dates back to the 2010 season. The
CAA Coach of the Year honor is the first for Goon.
William & Mary placed a league-high
three players on the All-CAA first team with Schaffer joined by senior
midfielder
Cortlyn Bristol (5g, 13a)
and senior defender Kiersten Harpe
(2a). Drexel was represented by Badana and sophomore defender Melissa Chapman (3g), while Hofstra had
Galton and freshman midfielder Jill
Mulholland (6g, 5a) on the squad.
Making the first team from Delaware
were senior forward Ali Miller (7g,
1a) and sophomore defender Allegra Gray.
Rounding out the squad were UNCW senior forward Stephanie Rose, who led the CAA in goals (13) and points (37), and
Northeastern junior midfielder Hanna
Terry (2g, 5a).
