BROOKLINE, Mass. (November 5, 2009) - Northeastern freshman forward Devin Petta was selected as the 2009 Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer Player and Rookie of the Year in voting by the league's head coaches. The award was presented Thursday night on the eve of the semifinals of the CAA Women's Soccer Championship in Brookline, Mass.

Also receiving top women's soccer honors from the conference were William & Mary sophomore back Diana Weigel as CAA Defender of the Year and Northeastern's Ed Matz as CAA Coach of the Year.

Petta is the first women's soccer player in league history to earn CAA Player and Rookie of the Year accolades in the same season. The Whitman, Mass. native tops the CAA with 35 points and is tied for the conference lead in goals (14) and game-winning goals (7). The 35 points are the most-ever for a Northeastern player in a season and the 14 goals tied a school record. Petta enters this weekend's CAA Women's Soccer Championship ranked 11th nationally in points per game and 13th in goals per game. She tallied at least one point in nine of the Huskies' 11 CAA contests and enters the conference tournament with a goal in her past four matches.

Weigel was the top performer on a William & Mary defense that was tied for second in the CAA with nine shutouts and surrendered just 22 goals in 19 contests this season. Five of the shutouts came in conference action. The sophomore back also contributed offensively, ranking second on the team with five assists. Three of the five assists came in league play. Weigel is the third Tribe player to receive CAA Defender of the Year honors.

Matz was chosen as Coach of the Year after guiding Northeastern to its first CAA regular-season title with a 7-1-3 league record. The Huskies, who are second in the CAA in goals (35), were unbeaten in their final seven matches (5-0-2) and closed the regular season with four straight victories. The Huskies also set a school record for regular-season wins in 2009 with a 12-3-3 mark. Northeastern, which is unbeaten (7-0-2) at home this season, will be the top seed and host for the CAA Women's Soccer Championship, which gets underway on Friday.

Hofstra placed a league-high four players on the All-CAA first team, while James Madison had three. Making the team from the Pride were junior forward Salma Tarik (10g, 4a), sophomore midfielder Courtney Breen (3g, 2a), junior midfielder Tiffany Yovino (3g, 1a) and senior defender Jess Crankshaw (4g, 4a). Representing the Dukes were senior forward Corky Julien (14g, 3a), junior midfielder Teresa Rynier (2g, 12a) and senior defender Teri Maykoski (0g, 2a).

Also joining Petta and Weigel on the first team were George Mason junior midfielder Omolyn Davis (10g, 8a), and Georgia State junior goalkeeper Heidi Blankenship (1.09 GAA, 125 saves).
