Northeastern Falls 2-0 To Boston College In NCAA's
After starting the season 0-6-3 against non-conference opponents that included three NCAA-qualifying teams, the Huskies (6-9-6) opened its Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) schedule with four-consecutive wins and earned the CAA Championships' No. 3 seed with a 5-2-1 conference record.
The Huskies edged past both Delaware and William & Mary in penalty kicks to square off against James Madison in the conference championship game. Northeastern downed the CAA's No. 1 seed, 3-1, to claim the program's second CAA title and its second trip to the NCAA tournament.
The improbable run ended, however, at the hands of crosstown rival Boston College.
The Eagles offense attacked often in the early minutes of the NCAA first-round game. BC put a shot just over the net from 18 yards out in the first 30 seconds of the match. Three minutes later NU goalkeeper Paige Burnett punched away a crossing pass and then had to quickly recover as BC gathered the rebound and put a shot on goal, but Burnett was there in time to make the stop.
BC broke through 10 minutes into the match when Mackenzie Meehan buried a crossing pass by Gibby Wagner from the right side to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
The Huskies pieced together a promising attack late in the first half when Hanna Terry sent a long pass to Lahaina Zoller in the right corner, but Zoller's crossing pass in the box was a hair too high for Haley Sinclair to control.
The Huskies trailed BC, 1-0, entering the break and had Burnett to thank for the close score as the junior from Placentia, Calif., recorded six saves in the opening half.
BC claimed a 2-0 lead less than one minute into the second period when Lauren Bernard recorded an unassisted goal by finding an opening in the upper-right corner of the goal on a shot from the left corner of the box.
Shayna Blackwood nearly found the back of the net in the 79th minute for the Huskies when she corralled a pass just outside the six-yard box. The sophomore turned and fired a shot on net, but BC keeper Alex Johnson pushed the attempt over the cross bar. Blackwood's attempt was the only shot on goal for NU as the BC defense stifled the Huskies' attack.
