CAA Tennis Weekly Honors - April 9
RICHMOND, Va. (April 9, 2013) – The CAA has honored six men’s and women’s tennis players for outstanding performances last week.
Drexel sophomore Badr Ouabdelmoumen (Rabat, Morocco) and the UNCW doubles team of senior Kosta Blank (Winnipeg, Canada) and senior Chris Cooprider (Denver, Colo.) earned CAA men’s tennis honors for the week ending April 7. Recognized on the women’s side were William & Mary junior Maria Belaya (Melbourne, Fla.) and the Delaware duo of freshman Danea Jonjic’ (Split, Croatia) and sophomore Kim Milla (Miguel Hidalgo, Mexico).
Ouabdelmoumen was named the CAA men’s tennis Player of the Week after going 2-0 at the No. 1 singles spot last week. The sophomore rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory over Delaware’s Troy Beneck that gave Drexel a 4-3 victory against the Blue Hens. It was the first time in program history that the Dragons have beaten their conference rival. Ouabdelmoumen also defeated Saint Joseph’s Jose Sierra, 6-1, 6-2, in a 4-3 setback to the Hawks to improve his singles record to 8-3 this season.
Blank and Cooprider were honored as the CAA men’s Doubles Team of the Week after recording an impressive victory at No. 1 doubles in 57th-ranked UNCW’s 5-2 triumph over Georgia State. Blank and Cooprider, who are ranked #18 nationally by the ITA, topped 38th-ranked Lucas Santa Ana and Victor Valente of GSU, 8-4. It was the first loss for the Panthers’ tandem (12-1) in dual match competition. Blank and Cooprider have won four matches in a row and are 9-3 this spring.
Belaya was chosen as the CAA women’s tennis Player of the Week after pulling out a three-set upset victory at No. 1 singles to clinch William & Mary’s 4-3 win over #58 Georgia State. The junior knocked off 37th-ranked Abigail Tere-Apisah, 7-5, 6-7, 6-1 for her second victory this season over a nationally ranked foe. It was the 30th career singles win for Belaya, who improved to 12-6 in dual matches this season.
Jonjic and Milla were named the CAA women’s Doubles Team of the Week after going 3-0 at No. 3 doubles in Delaware’s conference victories over Towson (5-2), Drexel (5-2) and Hofstra (7-0) last week. The Blue Hens’ tandem defeated Towson’s Andrea Samlin and Nisha Shah, 8-6, topped Drexel’s Aysenil Orhon and Alex Bell, 8-4, and beat Hofstra’s Louise Lopez and Paige Polizois, 8-4. Jonjic and Milla have won four consecutive matches and are 5-1 this spring.
