Northeastern, Mason Open MBB Postseason Play

Postseason play in CAA men's basketball gets underway on Tuesday night with a pair of televised games.

Northeastern faces Alabama in the first round of the NIT in a contest televised by ESPN2 at 9 p.m. George Mason takes on future CAA member College of Charleston in a first-round CBI contest televised by AXS.tv at 7 p.m.

Northeastern (20-12) is making its third appearance in the NIT after capturing its first CAA regular-season title with a 14-4 mark and advancing to the CAA championship game for the first time. The Huskies are led by by a trio of all-conference performers in senior guard Joel Smith (16.1 ppg) and Jonathan Lee (13.8 ppg) and sophomore forward Quincy Ford (12.4 ppg). The contest is a homecoming for sophomore Reggie Spencer (9.8 ppg/6.1 rpg), who is from Tuscaloosa.

Alabama (21-12), which reached the semifinals of the SEC tournament last weekend, advanced to the NIT championship game in 2011. The Crimson Tide is also led by its backcourt of junior Trevor Releford (15.4 ppg) and Trevor Lacey (11.7 ppg). Alabama is coached by former CAA Coach of the Year Anthony Grant.

George Mason (18-14) is playing in the CBI for the first time but is making its fifth postseason appearance in the last six years. The Patriots are led by All-CAA guard Sherrod Wright (16.5 ppg), junior point guard Bryon Allen (7.9 ppg) and junior forward Jonathan Arledge (8.0 ppg/4.5 rpg).

College of Charleston (24-10) advanced to the championship game of its final Southern Conference tournament. All-Conference guard Andrew Lawrence averages a team-high 13.5 ppg for the Cougars and backcourt mate Anthony Stitt adds 10.7 ppg.
