RICHMOND, Va. (April 25, 2013) – The Colonial Athletic Association will no longer sponsor wrestling as a championship sport after 22 years of competition.

Binghamton University, Boston University, Drexel University and Hofstra University accepted membership on Thursday into the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association beginning with the 2013-14 season. With the departure of those schools, the CAA no longer meets the NCAA requirements to sponsor the sport.

The CAA began sponsoring wrestling in 1991-92 and merged with the East Coast Wrestling Association in 2001-02. Hofstra won a league-high 11 CAA wrestling championships during its 12 years as a member of the conference. George Mason (5), James Madison (2), Virginia Tech (2), Binghamton (1) and Old Dominion (1) have also captured conference titles.
