JMU, Drexel Reach CAA Men's Tennis Semifinals

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (April 19, 2013) – Third-seeded James Madison and #4 Drexel were winners in the quarterfinals of the 2013 CAA Men’s Tennis Championship on Friday at the Millie West Tennis Facility on the campus of William & Mary.

The Dukes posted a 5-0 victory over #6 Hofstra, while the Dragons edged #5 Delaware 4-3 in a thrilling four-hour match.

JMU advanced to the CAA semifinals for the first time since 2001. The Dukes earned the doubles point as the No. 3 team of Bastien Russo and Florent Sentenac blanked the Pride’s Pedro Gimenez and Joe Erichsen, 8-0, and the No. 2 tandem of Hugo Ramadier and Greg Vladimirsky topped Ryhaan Gill and Matt Gemmell, 8-1. JMU continued its strong play in singles as Robert Stirling rolled past Gill, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 and Maxi Branth defeated Gimenez, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6. The Dukes closed out the match with victories at the top two spots as No. 1 Ryan Pool beat Hofstra’s Ari Richman, 6-4, 6-1, and Ramadier pulled out a 6-0, 7-6 (5), win.

Drexel reached the CAA semifinals with its win over the Blue Hens in a match that included four three-set contests. The Dragons picked up the doubles point with victories at the top two positions. At No. 1, Drexel’s Skyler Davis and Dan Koehler defeated Troy Beneck and Adam Lawton, 8-3, while the No. 2 team of Badr Ouabdelmoumen and Xabier Saavedra beat Evan Andrews and Nolan Gelman, 8-4.

Delaware got off to a fast start in singles. At No. 4, Gelman evened the match with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Koeher and the Blue Hens moved ahead with a 6-2, 6-2 win by Adam Lawton over Jeganathan Sri at No. 2. Drexel got the match back to 2-2 as Davis rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Andrews at No. 3.

The Blue Hens moved back on top with a victory at No. 1 as Beneck outlasted Ouabdelmoumen, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, but the Dragons tied it at 3-3 when Alex Fioravante fought back for a 3-6, 7-6 (9-7) win over Jason Derene at No. 6. Fiorvante overcame a 6-2 deficit in the second-set tiebreaker.

The match was decided in the final three-setter at No. 5. Saavedra battled past Mike Furr, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (5), 6-3 to clinch the victory.

In Saturday’s semifinals at 2 p.m., #1 UNCW faces #4 Drexel and #2 William Mary meets #3 James Madison.
