W&M Captures CAA Women's Tennis Championship
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (April 21, 2013) – Top-seeded William & Mary defeated #2 UNCW, 4-0, to capture the 2013 CAA Women’s Tennis Championship on Sunday afternoon at the Millie West Tennis Facility on the campus of William & Mary.
It was the league-record 22nd CAA women’s tennis title for the Tribe, who improved to 17-5 and earned the CAA’s automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s Tennis Championship. UNCW, which was appearing in the CAA championship match for the first time, dropped to 14-7 after losing for just the second time in the past 10 matches.
The Tribe jumped out to a quick start in the doubles competition. At No. 2, the W&M duo of Anik Cepeda and Hope Johnson rolled to an 8-2 victory over Angie Sekely and Alyssa Ritchie. Minutes later, the Tribe’s top tandem of Maria Belaya and Leeza Nemchinov also posted an 8-2 win over Olga Blank and Christine Kharkevich to clinch the doubles point.
In singles, W&M used strong performances at the top of the lineup to take control. Belaya, the CAA Player of the Year, topped Sekely, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1 and Nemchinov, the CAA Rookie of the Year, followed with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Christina Riley at No. 2. The Tribe earned the decisive point at No. 4 when Jeltje Loomans beat Ritchie, 7-5, 6-2.
