UNCW, JMU, Delaware Advance In Women's Tennis

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (April 19, 2013) – Second-seeded UNCW, #3 James Madison and #4 Delaware were winners in the quarterfinals of the 2013 CAA Women’s Tennis Championship on Friday at the Millie West Tennis Facility on the campus of William & Mary.

The 2nd-seeded Seahawks defeated #7 Hofstra, 5-0, the third-seeded Dukes topped #6 Towson, 4-0, and the fourth-seeded Blue Hens beat #5 Drexel, 4-0.

UNCW advanced to the CAA semifinals for the third year in a row with its victory over Hofstra. The Seahawks earned the doubles point as the No. 2 team of Angie Sekely and Alyssa Ritchie blanked the Pride’s Malissa Gilanchi and Bianca Derrick, 8-0, and the No. 3 tandem of Kelly Cameron and Miller Hales beat Louise Lopez and Paige Polizois, 8-2. In singles, UNCW capped the match with four straight-set victories. Olga Blank was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Gilanchi at No. 3 and Ritchie got past Lopez, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4. The deciding matches ended at nearly the same time as Christine Kharkevich topped Polizois, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 6 and Cameron defeated Derrick, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5.

JMU reached the CAA semifinals for the first time since 2003 after posting a 4-0 victory over Towson. The Dukes picked up the doubles point by capturing two of the three matches. JMU’s No. 1 team of Taylor Pinchoff and Michelle Nguyen beat the Tigers’ Ayana Dow and Moriah Burke, 8-1, but Towson drew even as the No. 2 tandem of Nani Lizana and Ariel Burke topped Cara Wirth and Katherine Bulling, 8-2. At No. 3, the Dukes’ Ruxandra Andriescu and Jacqueline Palmucci registered an 8-1 win over Andrea Samlin and Lorena Ferrer. JMU closed the match out in singles as Palmucci beat Dow, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 2, Megan Douglass got past Ariel Burke, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 6 and Andriescu downed Nisha Shah, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3.

Delaware moved into the semifinals of the CAA Tournament for the first time after its win over Drexel. The Blue Hens took the doubles point as the No. 2 team of Nataliya Naumova and Christina Harrington defeated Nicole Pivonka and Emma Brook, 8-2, and the No. 3 duo of Danea Jonjic and Kim Milla downed Alex Bell and Aysenil Orhon, 8-2. Delaware wrapped up the match in singles as Naumova topped Marcela Rosales, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 3, Olivia Heim defeated Brook, 7-6 (2), 6-2 at No. 4 and Milla beat Orhon, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6.

In Saturday’s semifinals at 10 a.m., #1 William & Mary faces #4 Delaware and #2 UNCW takes on #3 James Madison.
