Heinicke Named Walter Payton Award Finalist
PHILADELPHIA - Old Dominion sophomore quarterback Taylor Heinicke has been named one of three finalists for The Sports Network's Walter Payton Award honoring FCS Football's most outstanding player, as announced by the organization on Wednesday.
Heinicke will join fellow finalists Miguel Maysonet of Stony Brook and Eric Breitenstein of Wofford at The Sports Network's annual awards banquet on Dec. 17 in Philadelphia, where the winner will be revealed.
Heinicke was named CAA Football's Offensive Player of the Year earlier this month after leading Old Dominion and its top-ranked offense to a 10-1 overall record and the No. 4 seed in the NCAA Championship. In only his second year in the collegiate ranks, the Atlanta native leads the nation with 378 passing yards per game and 412 total yards per game and has already become the Monarchs' all-time career leader in completions, passing yards and touchdowns. The 2011 runner-up for the Jerry Rice Award honoring the country's top freshman, Heinicke has also thrown for an FCS-best 35 scores and 4,158 yards during a season in which he set new Division I records with 791 yards of total offense and 730 yards passing in the Monarchs' 64-61 win over New Hampshire.
