RICHMOND, Va. (August 19, 2013) – College of Charleston senior outside hitter Darcy Dorton has been selected as the 2013 CAA preseason volleyball Player of the Year according to a vote by the leagues head coaches.

Dorton was an All-Southern Conference first-team member last season while also earning honorable mention AVCA All-America honors -- the first in school history. The Muncie, Ind., native led the Cougars in 2012 with 529 kills with an average of 4.20 kills per set, a mark that ranks fourth in CofC history. Dorton also finished her junior campaign with a team-high 17 double-doubles and an average of 2.83 digs per set.

Joining Dorton on the preseason All-CAA volleyball squad were Northeastern outside hitter Kelly Bacon, Hofstra outside hitter Kelsie Wills, Delaware libero Ariel Shonk, CofC middle blocker/right side hitter Sloane White, William and Mary outside hitter Dessi Koleva and UNCW right side hitter Christi Laite.

Bacon returns for her senior campaign after capturing the CAA Player of the Year award in 2012 as well as earning first-team All-CAA honors. She played in all 96 of the Huskies’ sets last season and led the squad in kills (346), kills per set (3.60) and established a career-high with 4.27 points per set.

Wills, a first-team All-CAA selection last season as a sophomore, paced Hofstra with an impressive 581 kills and led the team in points. The New Zealand native also ranked second on the team in service aces with 39 and took home Most Outstanding Player honors after leading the Pride to the CAA championship.

Shonk had a sensational first season for the Blue Hens, earning the CAA Defensive Specialist of the Year award along with being named to the All-CAA third team and CAA All-Rookie squad. The sophomore averaged 5.68 digs per set, which not only led the Blue Hens but also topped the CAA.

White, a junior, was a second-team All-SoCon selection last season after trailing only Dorton on the team in kills with 364. Her .323 hitting percentage ranked fifth in the SoCon and she helped the Cougars claim the conference’s title by being named SoCon Tournament MVP.

Koleva returns for her sophomore campaign with plenty of confidence after being selected as the 2012 CAA Rookie of the Year. She was also named a second-team All-CAA member and All-Rookie team selection. The Torrance, Calif., native averaged 2.24 kills and 2.24 digs per set last year.

UNCW’s Laite, a second-team All-CAA honoree in 2012 for the second straight season, led the Seahawks in kills (2.81) and points (3.31) per set. The senior also registered double-figure kills 15 times along with two double-doubles in 2012.

The 2013 CAA volleyball season starts Aug. 30, with all eight of the league’s teams in action.
