Northeastern Notches Second CAA Rowing Championship

FAIRFAX STATION, Va. (April 24, 2011) - Northeastern swept all three events to claim the Virginia 529 College Savings Plan CAA Women's Rowing Championship for the second time on Sunday at Sandy Run Regional Park on the Occoquan Reservoir.

The Huskies captured the championship with 36 points. Defending champion Buffalo secured second with 25 points with Old Dominion one point behind in third with 24 points. Drexel finished fourth 19 points, Delaware (13) took fifth and George Mason (9) rounded out this year's field.

Northeastern crossed the line in first in the Varsity 4 race with a time of 7:29.2. Old Dominion followed in second with a time of 7:32.3 and Drexel clocked a 7:36.7 for third.

The Huskies turned in a time of 6:43.3 to pick up the win in the Second Varsity 8 while Buffalo (6:46.9) and Delaware (6:50.0) finished second and third, respectively.

Northeastern completed the three-race sweep with a top time of 6:30.7 in the Varsity 8. The Lady Monarchs earned runner-up honors with a time of 6:35.5 and the Bulls took third in a time of 6:38.0.

Four Northeastern rowers headlined the All-CAA first team following the conclusion of the championship. Laura Carroll, Jenifer Forbes, Greta Haselmann and Veronica Townsend earned all-conference honors for the Huskies. Joining them were Elizabeth Bratton (Drexel), Jennifer Easterling (Old Dominion), Kate Evely (Buffalo), Dana Haneman (Drexel), Ashley Hanhurst (Buffalo), Maureen McAuliffe (George Mason), Britt Ronald (Buffalo), Abby Voss (Old Dominion) and Courtney Williams (Delaware).

In a vote by the league's head coaches, Northeastern head coach Joe Wilhelm was named CAA Coach of the Year.
