HARRISONBURG, Va. (November 7, 2013) – Hofstra sophomore forward Leah Galton was chosen as the 2013 Colonial Athletic Association women’s soccer Player of the Year in voting by the league’s head coaches. The award was presented Thursday night on the eve of the semifinals of the CAA Women’s Soccer Championship in Harrisonburg, Va.

Also receiving top women’s soccer honors from the conference were James Madison senior defender Becky Sparks as CAA Defensive Player of the Year, JMU freshman forward Ashley Herndon as CAA Rookie of the Year and JMU’s Dave Lombardo as CAA Coach of the Year.

Galton, who was the CAA Rookie of the Year in 2012, is among the conference’s top five in goals, assists and points this season. She leads the league and is tied for 12th in Division I with 11 assists, ranks third in the conference with 27 points and is fifth in the CAA with eight goals. Galton contributed either a goal or an assist in 13 of Hofstra’s 18 matches, highlighted by a two-goal, one-assist effort against Boston College on Sept. 1. In less than two seasons with the Pride, Galton has already climbed into the top 10 on the school’s career lists for goals (19), assists (16) and points (54). Along with her Rookie of the Year honor in 2012, she made the All-CAA and All-Mid-Atlantic Region first teams and the CAA All-Tournament team. Galton is Hofstra’s second CAA women’s soccer Player of the Year, joining Tiffany Yovino in 2010.

Sparks anchored a JMU defense that allowed just 21 goals in 19 games, including a league-low seven goals in eight CAA contests. Three of the team’s six shutouts came against league foes. The senior defender also contributed offensively for the Dukes by scoring three goals and leading the team with six assists. Sparks has earned conference recognition during all four years at JMU, making the All-Rookie team in 2010, the All-CAA second team in 2011 and 2012 and the All-CAA first team this season. She is the Dukes’ first Defensive Player of the Year since 2001 when Jamie Miller won the award.

Herndon made an immediate impact for JMU, tying for the team lead with 17 points and ranking second on the squad in goals (6) and assists (5). The freshman also scored four game-winning goals, which was tied for the second-most in the CAA. Herndon contributed either a goal or an assist in nine of JMU’s 19 matches, including five of the Dukes’ nine conference contests. The second-team All-CAA pick is the Dukes’ first CAA Rookie of the Year since 2007.

Lombardo guided James Madison to its first outright CAA regular-season title with a 6-1-1 mark in league play. After starting the season with a 3-3 record, the Dukes went 11-1-1 over their next 13 contests and they enter this weekend’s CAA Tournament on a seven-match unbeaten streak. JMU scored two or more goals in 12 of their last 13 matches and recorded six shutouts defensively over that same stretch. The CAA Coach of the Year honor is the third for Lombardo, who also claimed the award in 1996 and 2007.

Seven schools had at least one player selected to the All-CAA first team. Joining Galton from Hofstra was junior forward Sam Scolarici, who led the league with 17 goals. William & Mary was represented by junior forward Emory Camper (10 goals) and sophomore goalkeeper Caroline Casey (0.86 GAA, 6 ShO), while Delaware had senior midfielder Chelsea Duffy (3g, 4a) and junior defender Allegra Gray on the squad. UNCW also had a pair of first-team honorees with sophomore forward Katrina Guillou (10g, 6a) and junior midfielder Stephanie Bronson (5g, 2a).

Rounding out the first team were JMU’s Sparks, Northeastern senior midfielder Hanna Terry (3g, 5a) and Drexel junior defender Melissa Chapman.
