UNCW Earns Third CAA Men's Golf Championship Title, McLeod Takes Individual Honors

SOUTHPORT, N.C. (April 28, 2013) – The UNCW Seahawks held onto their lead through the third round to earn their third straight CAA Men’s Golf Championship title on the St. James Plantation Reserve Club Sunday afternoon with a team score of 888 (305-283-300).

Junior Payne McLeod earned medalist honors carding 1-under par (73-67-75—215) after 54 holes to lead the Seahawks. Junior Josh Woodfox, joined McLeod on the All-Tournament team with a fourth place finish posting a three-round total of 220 (79-67-75).  Also earning All-Tournament honors was William & Mary’s Alex Hick’s for his second place finish (71-73-75—219) and Jeremy Wells (74-75-71—220) for his third place honor. James Madison’s Rich Leeper (75-73-76—224) and Hofstra’s Brandon Shin (81-72-71—224) finished the tournament tied for fifth place to receive All-Tournament accolades.

UNCW, which won its fifth overall CAA title, earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals. James Madison (306-297-309—912) followed the Seahawks in second place among the team standings and William & Mary earned third place (304-306-306—319). Drexel (303-311-309—923) completed the three-day event in fourth place, while Delaware (309-311-305—925) earned fifth place. Towson (317-299-313—929) and Hofstra (332-316-315—963) closed out the team standings in sixth and seventh, respectively.

Finishing among the top 10 scoring leaders, UNCW’s Thomas Bass (79-74-74—227) and Stefan Brewer (76-75-76—227) joined James Madison’s Ryan Vince (74-74-79—227) tied for seventh place. Drexel’s James Braunsberg (71-76-81-228) and Delaware’s Ben Conroy (76-80-72—228) completed the tournament tied for 10th.

In the third round, Wells and Shin carded a round-low 71. Shin posted five birdies, including four consecutive birdies on holes 1 through 4. Wells and Leeper each scored four birdies on the day and Leeper finished the round with back-to-back birdies on #17 & #18. The Blue Hens’ Conroy also carded five birdies to score a personal weekend-low 72 on the weekend in the final round.

The NCAA will announce Regional selections on Monday, May 6 on at 9 p.m. The following six sites will host regionals on May 16-18: University Club, Baton Rouge, La.; Golden Eagle Country Club (Tallahassee, Fla.); Scarlet Course (Columbus, Ohio); The Blessings Golf Course (Fayetteville, Ark.); Palouse Ridge Golf Club (Pullman, Wash.) and Karsten Golf Course (Tempe, Ariz.).
