UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (March 15, 2013) – Senior All-America forward Elena Delle Donne recorded her ninth double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds as top-seeded Delaware rallied for a hard-fought 51-43 victory over #9 UNCW in the quarterfinals of the 2013 CAA Women’s Basketball Championship, presented by Jani-King, on Friday afternoon.

The 15th-ranked Blue Hens (28-3), who won their school-record 23rd straight game, will meet either Northeastern or Hofstra in the semifinals at 2 p.m. on Saturday. UNCW finished its season with a 5-26 mark.

Delaware trailed 20-15 at the half and was still down 30-28 with 11:45 remaining before going on a 15-4 run over the next 6:37 to take control of the contest. Delle Donne scored nine points during that run, including a turnaround jumper from the baseline that gave the Blue Hens a 43-34 advantage with 5:08 to go.

Senior Danielle Parker added eight points and 11 rebounds for UD and guard Lauren Carra chipped in 10 points and seven boards. UNCW, which played its five starters for the full 40 minutes for the second day in a row, got 13 points from sophomore guard Kelva Atkins, 12 points from Tawanna Lee and 10 points from Jessica Freeman. Karneshia Garrett pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds for the Seahawks.

Delaware jumped out to an early 7-2 lead on a short jumper by Delle Donne with 14:59 left in the opening half, but the Blue Hens failed to convert a field goal over the next 12:08. UNCW took advantage as Freeman buried a three-pointer from the left corner to give the Seahawks their first lead, 10-9, with 8:47 to go. A three-pointer from the right corner by Dana Brown pushed the Seahawks’ advantage to 15-9 with 5:56 remaining.

Delaware broke the scoring drought by turning back-to-back steals into layups and Carra capped a 6-0 run over a 58-second span with another layup, tying the game at 15-15. However, UNCW was able to regain the momentum heading into halftime as Lee hit a jumper and Atkins buried a trey from the left corner with a second left on the clock to put the Seahawks ahead, 20-15.

UD gained its first advantage of the second half, 23-22, on a Delle Donne elbow jumper with 14:47 remaining. The two teams traded baskets over the next couple of minutes, with UNCW taking its final lead of the game on a Lee three-pointer from the top of the key with 11:45 left.

Delle Donne took over from there, scoring nine points during the deciding run that was capped by a turnaround jumper that made it 43-34 with 5:08 left.

After making just 5-of-23 field goals (21.7%) in the first 20 minutes, Delaware shot 52% in the second half and finished at 37.5% for the game. UNCW shot 30.2% overall, including 7-of-30 from three-point range.
