CAA Tennis Weekly Honors - March 5
RICHMOND, Va. (March 5, 2013) - The CAA has recognized five men's and women's tennis players for outstanding performances last week.
William & Mary junior Ben Hoogland (Glenview, Ill.) and the UNCW duo of seniors Chris Cooprider (Denver, Colo.) and Kosta Blank (Winnipeg, Canada) earned CAA men's tennis honors for the week ending March 3. Receiving honors on the women's side were William & Mary freshman Leeza Nemchinov (Moscow, Russia) and her doubles partner, junior Sydney Smith (Washington, D.C.).
Hoogland was selected as the CAA men's tennis Player of the Week after going 2-1 last week. The junior clinched W&M's 4-3 win over Illinois State by posting a three-set victory over Rolando Torrellas, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, at the No. 4 spot. He ran his winning streak to four by defeating Jon Ho of #22 Wake Forest, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (8) at the No. 4 post. Despite falling at the No. 3 spot against 9th-ranked Georgia, he has a dual match record of 9-4 this season.
Cooprider and Blank were honored as the CAA men's Doubles Team of the Week after going 2-0 at the No. 1 spot in UNCW's 7-0 victories over Coastal Carolina and Davidson. The duo, which is ranked 15th nationally by the ITA, topped Coastal's Garik Yedigarian and Matias De Pasquale, 8-4, and downed Davidson's Chris Mark and Kevin Moore, 8-2. They are now 5-2 in dual matches.
Nemchinov was named the CAA women's tennis Player of the Week after clinching a match for the third time this season in the Tribe's 5-2 triumph at Wake Forest. The freshman fell 7-6 in the opening set against Xue Zhang at the No. 3 spot before winning the next two 6-0, 6-4 to record her seventh straight victory. Nemchinov improved to 11-2 in dual matches this season.
Smith and Nemchinov were honored as the CAA women's Doubles Team of the Week after cruising past Brigita Bercyte and Karen Forman, 8-1, at the No. 3 slot to earn the doubles point against Wake Forest. The tandem improved to 3-0 in dual matches this season.
