Drexel Scores Late Goal to Advance to Third CAA Title Contest
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (November 3, 2012) - Drexel sophomore forward Margaux Lourtie scored the game-winning goal with four seconds to play to give the top-seeded Dragons a 2-1 victory over fifth-seeded Delaware in the first CAA Field Hockey Championship semifinal. Drexel will play second-seeded Northeastern in tomorrow's title contest at 3:00 p.m.
Drexel senior midfielder Amanda Fleischut led the Dragons (14-6, 5-2 CAA) with five shots on goal and two assists, while sophomore goalkeeper Jantien Gunter made seven saves while protecting the cage for the entire 70 minutes. Delaware (8-12, 3-4 CAA) was led by Michaela Patzner, who recorded one goal on two shots.
The Blue Hens entered the scoring column first with a goal from Patzner in the 15th minute. Patzner cut through the Dragons defense and beat Gunter one-on-one to put the Blue Hens up 1-0.
Drexel held the possession advantage through the first half and outshot Delaware, 6-2. The Blue Hen defense was also able to fight off three Dragon penalty corners, while holding Drexel to just one shot during four minutes playing one player-down.
In the second half, Drexel tied the game in the 42nd minute with a penalty corner goal from junior midfielder Lindsay McArdle. Fleischut controlled the pass at the top of the arc and fired a shot that rebounded off UD junior goalkeeper Sarah Scher. McArdle was able to control the rebound and tipped it into the lower right corner for the goal.
Late in the second half Drexel was awarded a penalty corner with 40 seconds to play. Fleischut once again controlled the ball at the top of the arc and fired a shot into the Delaware defense. The ball was knocked out towards the midfield when Fleischut retrieved the ball and fired a shot on goal that rebounded off Scher. Lourtie streaked towards the goal and tipped in the loose ball for the score.The Drexel defense was able to stop seven Delaware penalty corners in the second half with Gunter making six saves.
