Hempstead, NY -- On Wednesday, November 19, 2008, the Hofstra University Athletics Department held its Third Annual Mentoring Night at the University Club. This event enabled student-athletes to network and gain insight from twenty-three enthusiastic mentors who were all former student-athletes at Hofstra. These mentors represented a variety of career fields including finance, sales, marketing and public relations, medicine, education and coaching, real estate, law, law enforcement and sports administration.
The night began with a welcome from Executive Associate Director of Athletics Danny McCabe. He then introduced mentor, Joseph Carrello (pictured), to deliver the keynote address. Carrello is a Branch Manager and Vice President for Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, who graduated in 1991 and was a member of the men's lacrosse team.
Following Carrello's address, student-athletes had the opportunity to breakout into round table discussions within areas that matched their career aspirations. Approximately 110 student-athletes participated in the event, and all those in attendance left with a helpful packet with career resources, as well as information on each mentor. The night concluded with a brief networking reception for the mentors to thank them for their participation.
The Mentoring Night is just one career development initiative for our student-athletes throughout the year. Such an event exemplifies the mission of the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program in the effort to best prepare student-athletes for their professional careers.
