Nine CAA Women's Soccer Players Named All-Region

RICHMOND, Va. (December 5, 2013) – Nine CAA women’s soccer players were selected to the NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region team.

Earning first team honors were James Madison senior defender Becky Sparks and Hofstra sophomore forward Leah Galton. Sparks was chosen as the 2013 CAA Defensive Player of the Year after anchoring a Dukes’ backline that gave up just seven goals in eight conference matches. She also contributed offensively with three goals and a team-high seven assists. Galton was selected as the 2013 CAA Player of the Year after an impressive season offensively for the Pride. She led the CAA with 11 assists, scored eight goals and ranked third in the conference with 27 points.

There were also two CAA representatives on the All-Region second team. William & Mary sophomore goalkeeper Caroline Casey made the squad after leading the conference with a 0.91 goals against average. The first-team All-CAA pick was also first in the league in save percentage (.813) and shutouts (6) and fourth in saves (74). Towson senior forward Emily Banes ranked second in the CAA with 15 goals and 36 points and was fifth in the conference with six assists. The second-team All-CAA honoree finished her career as the Tigers’ all-time leader in goals (30) and points (77).

Five CAA players were named to the All-Region third team – Drexel junior defender Melissa Chapman, Delaware junior defender Allegra Gray, Delaware senior midfielder Chelsea Duffy, UNCW sophomore forward Katrina Guillou and James Madison freshman forward Ashley Herndon.

Chapman earned first-team All-CAA accolades for the second year in a row after leading a Drexel defense that recorded four shutouts. Gray garnered first-team all-conference honors for the second straight season as the top performer on a Blue Hens’ backline that posted seven shutouts. Duffy, a first-team All-CAA selection, contributed three goals and four assists for UD this season. Guillou made the All-CAA first team for the first time after leading the Seahawks in goals (10), assists (6) and points (26). Herndon was chosen as the CAA Rookie of the Year after contributing six goals and seven assists for a JMU team that captured the CAA regular-season title.
