Bader Named Executive Director Of Colonial Academic Alliance

RICHMOND, Va. (November 19, 2013) – The Colonial Academic Alliance has announced the hiring of Dr. John B. Bader as its new Executive Director.

Dr. Bader has spent the past two years as the Director of International Programs at Marks Education in Bethesda, Md. Previously he served as the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Academic Affairs at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

“We are extremely excited that Dr. Bader has accepted the leadership position of the Colonial Academic Alliance,” said Dr. Herman Berliner, chair of the Provosts’ Council.  “His energy, creativity and perspectives will immediately energize our students and faculty enhancing the collaborative work of the Alliance.  His background in international education in this era of global education will open many new opportunities for our students and faculty.”

In his role as the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Academic Affairs at Johns Hopkins from 2004-11, Dr. Bader supervised the offices of Academic Advising, Study Abroad, Summer and Intersession Programs, Academic Services and the Post Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Program. He was a national leader and advocate for scholarships, including international and public service grants, during a decade as a National Scholarship Advisor at Johns Hopkins.

Dr. Bader was a Fulbright Scholar to India in 1985-86, worked as a Brookings Institution Governmental Studies Research Fellow in 1992-93 and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. In 2011, he received the Outstanding Academic Advising Administrator award from the National Academic Advising Association.

Prior to his work at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Bader was an Assistant Professor of Political Science and Director of UCLA’s Washington, D.C. Programs Center. He was also a policy director and speechwriter for United States Senator Jon Corzine of New Jersey. Dr. Bader has provided political commentary on CBS News, MSNBC, NPR and talk radio on issues of partisanship, Congressional elections and politics, and tax policy. He worked for two years as a political researcher and assistant editor for ABC News’ Political Unit.

Dr. Bader has authored two books: Dean’s List: Eleven Habits of Highly Successful College Students and Taking the Initiative: Leadership Agendas in Congress and the “Contract with America.”

He received a Bachelor of Arts in History from Yale University and earned his Master’s and Doctorate in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The Colonial Academic Alliance, which will be housed within the Honors College at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y., was created by the CAA presidents in 2002 and is administered by the provosts of the member institutions. The Alliance is an academic consortium that links the 10 CAA institutions in programs that improve the quality of teaching, learning and research for all. The programs include all areas of university life outside of intercollegiate athletics, with efforts focused on undergraduate research, international programs and resource sharing.

Members of the Colonial Academic Alliance are College of Charleston (Charleston, S.C.), University of Delaware (Newark, Del.), Drexel University (Philadelphia, Pa.), Elon University (Elon, N.C.), Hofstra University (Hempstead, N.Y.), James Madison University (Harrisonburg, Va.), University of North Carolina Wilmington (Wilmington, N.C.), Northeastern University (Boston, Mass.), Towson University (Towson, Md.) and College of William and Mary (Williamsburg, Va.).
