Dragons Head to Semifinals with 65-31 Triumph over Tribe
UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (March 15, 2013) - Third-seeded Drexel built a commanding 25-point halftime lead and cruised to a 65-31 win over sixth-seeded William & Mary in the final quarterfinal game of the CAA Women's Basketball Championship, presented by Jani-King, on Friday night at the Show Place Arena.
The Dragons (21-9) advance to the semifinals where they will face second-seeded James Madison at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. William & Mary ended its season with an 8-22 record.
Drexel senior forward Taylor Wootton was 8-of-10 from the floor and scored a team-high 17 points, 13 of which came in the opening half. Senior Hollie Mershon chipped in 11 points and guards Meghan Creighton and Rachel Pearson each drained three treys and finished with nine points.
Senior Taylor Hilton was the only William & Mary player in double figures as she contributed team highs of 15 points and 10 rebounds. The double-double was the first of her career.
Drexel was up 3-2 early in the contest when it went on a 25-5 run over the next 11 minutes to take control of the game. Wootton scored eight points during the spurt, including a jumper that put the Dragons ahead 28-7 with 7:04 to play in the half. Drexel closed the period with eight consecutive points, including a trey by Rachel Pearson with 33 seconds left that made it 36-11 at halftime.
The Dragons continued to roll in the second half, starting the period on a 9-2 run to push the score to 45-13 on a Renee Johnson-Allen layup. Drexel would build the lead to as much as 36.
Drexel shot 46.6% from the floor and did much of its damage
from three-point range, hitting 11-of-28 treys. William & Mary shot just
24% in the contest, including 2-of-10 from three. The Tribe's 11 first-half
points were the fewest by a team in a half in tournament history and the 31
total points were a season low.
The semifinals will be broadcast on Comcast SportsNet. The top-seeded Delaware Blue Hens will take on #5 Hofstra at 2 p.m., followed by #2 James Madison versus #3 Drexel match-up at 4:30 p.m. Find links to live audio on CAA Championships Central.
