ODU (24-8), whose reserves out-scored Towson 41-0, got 16 points and nine rebounds off the bench from junior Keyon Carter (Riveria Beach, Fla.) and 11 points from senior Marsharee Neely (Greensboro, N.C.). The Monarchs shot 45% from the floor and controlled the boards 60-27, with a 24-8 advantage on the offensive glass.
Four players scored in double figures for Towson (10-21), led by Josh Thornton (Rochester, N.Y) with 18 points. Robert Nwankwo (Upper Marlboro, Md.) tallied 13, while Troy Franklin (Baltimore, Md.) and RaShawn Polk (Greensboro, N.C.) each had 10 apiece. The Tigers shot 32% and only hit 4-of-21 from beyond the arc, as they end their season with a 10-21 mark.
The Monarchs advance to the first semifinal tomorrow afternoon against the winner of the George Mason/VCU game later this afternoon. That tip is set for 3 p.m.
The Tigers got off to a quick start, leading 7-4, but a Trian Iliadis (Perth, Western Australia) layup with 14:40 remaining capped off a 7-0 run that gave the Monarchs an 11-7 advantage. ODU would never trail the rest of the way.
Old Dominion stretched the lead to double digits with 3:42 left in the first half and took a 39-21 lead into the locker room.
The Monarchs continued their success offensively in the second half, shooting 46% and leading by as many as 37 points at 80-43, with 6:39 remaining.
The margin of victory was the largest ever for the Monarchs in a CAA Tournament game. ODU's 60 rebounds shattered the previous tournament record of 50.
