Basketball Season Tips Off On Friday

It's opening night for the 2013-14 CAA men's and women's basketball season, which includes the debut of the league's newest member - College of Charleston - and the first games in new SECU Arena at Towson.

All nine CAA men's basketball teams tip off their 2013-14 campaigns this weekend, including three contests against nationally ranked opponents.

Seven CAA squads open on Friday night. Defending CAA champion James Madison makes the short trip to 24th-ranked Virginia at 7 p.m., while Drexel goes across the country to meet 22nd-ranked UCLA for a midnight (EST) start. UNCW also faces a tough challenge on the road as it takes on Big Ten foe Iowa at 9:30 p.m.

Preseason CAA favorite Towson plays its first regular-season game at 5,200-seat SECU Arena against in-state foe Navy at 7:30 p.m. Hofstra also opens the season at home as it faces Monmouth in its first contest under new head coach Joe Mihalich.

Rounding out the Friday slate are a pair of 7 p.m. games as Delaware travels to Richmond and William & Mary visits Hampton.

College of Charleston takes the floor for the first time as a member of the CAA on Saturday afternoon with a 1 p.m. clash against defending national champion Louisville.

Northeastern will be the final CAA team to open its season when the Huskies meet city rival Boston University at TD Garden at 12:30 p.m. Also on Sunday, UNCW faces Big 12 opponent Iowa State, Delaware takes on Charleston Southern in its home opener and Hofstra entertains Fairleigh Dickinson.

On the women's side, there are six games on the Friday schedule. Highlighting the slate is preseason league favorite James Madison hosting ACC foe Virginia at 7 p.m. Towson takes the floor for the first time at SECU Arena against Navy under new coach Niki Reid Geckeler, while CAA newcomer College of Charleston entertains Kennesaw State at 8 p.m.

Two-time defending CAA champion Delaware travels to Rhode Island at 5 p.m., Northeastern visits local rival Boston University at 6 p.m. and Hofstra heads to Robert Morris at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, Drexel, the 2013 WNIT champion, plays host Toledo in the opening round of the Glass City Tournament. UNCW faces a difficult challenge to start the year with a road test at 6th-ranked Notre Dame.

Wililam & Mary makes it debut under new coach Ed Swanson on Monday night as the Tribe visits in-state opponent Longwood at 7 p.m.
