Dragons Set to Take on Florida in WNIT Semifinal
The Dragons earned their trip to the semifinals with a 56-43 win at Auburn on Saturday night. Drexel led nearly the entire game, spotting the Tigers a 5-0 lead out of the gates before going on a 10-0 run to take a lead it would not relinquish. Hollie Mershon had 19 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists, while Fiona Flanagan added 13 points and Taylor Wootton chipped in 12. The win was the Dragons' 11th on the road this season as they established a new program record for road wins, and was their first ever victory over an SEC opponent.
Drexel will have to repeat that particular feat on Wednesday if the Dragons want to advance to the WNIT title game. The opponent in the semifinal will be Florida (22-14), which has won its first four WNIT games on the road to reach the semifinals. The Gators have visited Florida International, Winthrop, Charlotte and James Madison to reach the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Wednesday night, winning those four games by an average of 6.0 points per contest. Florida averages 70.9 points per game for the season, and has not slowed down in the WNIT, with two games in the eighties and a low of 67 in their 67-65 win at Charlotte.
Jaterra Bonds paces the Gators with 13.1 points per game. Sydney Moss and Jennifer George also score in double figures, with George leading the team at 7.7 boards a contest. Eight of the 10 Gators who have seen action this year average at least 5.0 points per game, with all 10 contributing a minimum of 4.7 a contest. Nine of those players have seen action in at least 29 of the Gators' 36 games this year.
Drexel and Florida will tip things off at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Fans looking for tickets to help Pack the DAC can call 1-866-4-DREXEL or visit www.DrexelTickets.com. Those who can't make it to the game can listen to Ari Bluestein, who will describe all the action for DrexelDragons.com.
