CAA Tennis Weekly Honors - April 2
RICHMOND, Va. (April 2, 2013) – The CAA has honored six men’s and women’s tennis players for outstanding performances last week.
William & Mary senior Adrian Vodislav (Bucharest, Romania) and the UNCW duo of junior Rafael Aita (Lima, Peru) and sophomore Sam Williams (Bristol, England) earned CAA men’s tennis honors for the week ending March 31. Recognized on the women’s side were UNCW sophomore Alyssa Ritchie (Franklin, Ohio) and the James Madison tandem of sophomore Taylor Pinchoff (Sylvan Lake, Mich.) and Michelle Nguyen (Springfield, Va.).
Vodislav was named the CAA men’s tennis Player of the Week after clinching both of the Tribe’s CAA victories over James Madison (4-3) and Delaware (5-2) last Saturday. The senior won 12 of the final 14 games and rallied for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 win over the Dukes’ Florent Sentenac at the No. 5 position. Playing at the No. 3 position against UD, he defeated the Blue Hens’ Nolan Gelman, 7-5, 6-3. Vodislav has won four of his last five matches, including three in a row.
Aita and Williams were honored as the CAA men’s Doubles Team of the Week after going 2-0 at the No. 2 doubles position in the Seahawks’ road victories over USF (5-2) and UCF (7-0). The duo, who are ranked #42 nationally by the ITA, partnered for an 8-3 win over USF’s Juan Carlos Gerard and Federico Sabogal and also recorded an 8-3 victory against UCF’s Matthew Gladstone and Juan Bolona. Aita and Williams have a perfect 10-0 record in dual matches this season.
Ritchie was selected as the CAA women’s tennis Player of the Week after going 3-0 in singles in matches against Old Dominion (5-2), Delaware (6-1) and UCF (2-5). Playing at the No. 5 position, the sophomore topped ODU’s Nika Khmolovska, 6-4, 6-3, Delaware’s Olivia Heim, 6-2, 6-1, and UCF’s Courtney Griffith, 7-6 (4), 6-1. Ritchie has won eight consecutive singles matches and improved her dual match record to 12-3.
Pinchoff and Nguyen were named the CAA women’s Doubles Team of the Week after clinching the doubles point in JMU’s 4-2 victory over in-state foe Richmond last week. The duo pulled out an 8-6 win over the Spiders’ Melissa Kandinata and Katya Salas at the No. 1 position. For the season, Pinchoff and Nguyen have a 7-3 record at No. 1 doubles.
