McDowell Named Lowe's All-American
The award as well as the 10 finalists was chosen by a nationwide vote of Division I men's basketball head coaches, national media and fans. The distinction is given annually to the most outstanding senior student-athlete in NCAA Division I men's basketball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
McDowell became the first CAA men's basketball player to be named a finalist for the award and in turn the first to earn Lowe's Senior CLASS Award All-America honors. Earlier this season, the Tribe senior become the first two-time winner of the CAA Dean Ehlers Leadership Award, taking home the honor for the second straight year. A three-time CAA All-Academic Team honoree, McDowell will graduate from W&M with a degree in religious studies and a minor in economics.
The two-time team captain was named the CAA men's basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and is a two-time All-CAA performer on the court. He led the Green and Gold in scoring at 12.5 points per game, which ranked 16th in the CAA, to go along with 4.7 rebounds per game. This season, he became just the fourth player in W&M history to score 1,500 career points and pull down 500 career rebounds. He departs the Tribe program as its all-time leader ingames and minutes played.
McDowell is heavily involved in the community. He is the President of the Tribe Fellowship student organization on campus and leads a Bible Study group comprised of high school students at the Williamsburg Community Chapel. He is a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Council and is one of the select students at W&M to serve as a President's aide as a member of the W&M President's Council.
As part of being named a finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, McDowell traveled to New Orleans for the NCAA® Final Four® weekend to participate in several community activities. The finalist took part in a number of activities during the weekend, including being onsite at a community service project at the St. Bernard Recreation Center, an on-court presentation during Final Four Friday open practices at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome and an appear at the NCAA Dribble at Champions Square, signing autographs and kicking off the dribble for the more than 3,000 kidsregistered for the event.
