RICHMOND, Va. (December 20, 2013) – Colonial Athletic Association Commissioner Tom Yeager has announced the hiring of Samantha Barany as the conference’s new Assistant Commissioner of Championships.

Barany will serve as the CAA’s primary administrator for women’s basketball and will be the director of the CAA Women’s Basketball Championship.

“Samantha comes to the conference staff with sterling recommendations and a wealth of CAA experience and leadership,” Yeager said. “Her creativity and enthusiasm will enhance the championships for our student-athletes.”

Barany worked for nine years (2004-2013) as the head coach of the James Madison University swimming and diving program. She was chosen as the CAA women’s swimming Coach of the Year in 2012 after guiding the Dukes to their first conference championship in more than a decade. The Dukes also placed second at the CAA Championship in 2011 and 2013.

During her tenure, JMU had athletes qualify for the NCAA Championships, the U.S. Olympic Trials, the European Championships and the 2012 London Olympic Games. In addition, Barany had members of her team earn Scholar All-America status in 16 of 18 semesters.

Barany served as a Faculty Hearing Board Member on the JMU Honor Counsel. She was also a member of JMU’s Gender Equity Committee for Athletics, worked on the University’s Facilities Management Review Committee and served on search committees for head coaches at JMU.

Along with her women’s basketball responsibilities, Barany will oversee the administration, pre-event planning and game management at several other CAA Championships. She will also produce conference schedules, conduct annual coaches meetings and supervise the designated assignors of officials.
