RICHMOND, Va. (February 15, 2012) – Georgia State sophomore Abigail Tere-Apisah (Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea) and the William & Mary duo of sophomore Maria Belaya (Melbourne, Fla.) and sophomore Jeltje Loomans (Houten, The Netherland) earned women’s tennis honors from the Colonial Athletic Association for the week ending Feburary 12.
Tere-Apisah was selected as the CAA women’s tennis Player of the Week after opening the spring season with a 5-0 record, including a pair of victories at No. 1 singles over nationally ranked opponents. The sophomore overcame several match points to defeat 44th-ranked Jillian O’Neal of #13 Georgia Tech, 7-6, 3-6, 7-5. She also knocked off 93rd-ranked Kayla Duncan of Wake Forest, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1. Tere-Apisah improved to 3-1 against ranked opponents in her career.
Belaya and Loomans were honored as the CAA doubles team of the week. The Tribe’s top duo beat #28 Washington’s Denise Dy and Samantha Smith, 8-5, to help W&M capture the doubles point. They also posted victories over Minnesota’s Julia Courter and Emilie Renault, 8-5, and Georgia State’s Whitney Byrd and Tereza Lerova, 8-5. Belaya and Loomans are on a three-match winning streak.
