UNCW'S COOPRIDER CHOSEN AS MOST OUTSTANDING PERFORMER AT CAA MEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP
RICHMOND, Va. (April 26, 2011) – UNC Wilmington sophomore Chris Cooprider (Denver, Colo.) has been selected as the Most Outstanding Performer at the Virginia 529 College Savings Plan CAA Men’s Tennis Championship by a vote of the league’s head coaches.
Cooprider posted a perfect 3-0 record in singles and doubles to help lead third-seeded UNCW to its second conference title in the past three years with an exciting 4-3 triumph over #1 VCU last Sunday.
Playing at the #3 singles position, Cooprider evened the title match against VCU at 3-3 by rallying for a 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-1 victory over the Rams’ Antoine Baroz. He also had a 6-3, 6-3 win over Georgia State’s Breon Badger in UNCW’s 4-2 defeat of the second-seeded Panthers in the semifinals, and fought back for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over James Madison’s Florent Sentenac in the Seahawks’ 4-1 quarterfinal victory versus the Dukes.
Cooprider was equally as successful in doubles, teaming with senior Kinshuk Sharma at the number one position. The duo defeated VCU’s Jamie Vazquez and Camill Salomon, 8-6, in the finals, got past Georgia State’s Victor Valente and Thomas Cook, 8-6, in the semifinals, and rolled over James Madison’s Bertrand Moulin and Greg Vladimirsky, 8-3, in the quarterfinals.
Cooprider earned second-team All-CAA honors in singles and first-team All-CAA accolades in doubles this season.
