Hofstra's Galati Named First Team All-American
Hempstead, NY - Hofstra University junior pitcher/designated player Olivia Galati, who capped her brilliant junior campaign by leading the Hofstra Softball program to the NCAA Super Regionals, earned the highest honor of her stellar career today when she was named a first team All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).
Galati is
Hofstra's first-ever first team All-American and just the fifth in the
prestigious history of the Hofstra Softball program. Galati earned first team honors as an at-large/pitcher selection.
The Pride's other NFCA
All-Americans are: Crystal Boyd (second team in 1993, third team in
1994), Alicia Smith (second team in 2000), Lisa Ciavardini (third team
in 2000) and Amanda Hallaway (third team in 2003).
Hofstra finished this season with a record of 42-15 after advancing to the Super Regionals.
The third-year player from West
Babylon, NY led a talented Hofstra squad into the Super Regionals for
the first time in program history after the Pride won the NCAA Los
Angeles Regional with a perfect 3-0 record with wins over No. 12-seed
UCLA and two wins over San Diego State. Hofstra's amazing season came
to an end in the best-of-three Super Regional series against No. 19
South Florida as the Pride dropped the decisive third game, 2-1, to fall
one win short of a berth in the Women's College World Series.
Galati compiled a 34-7 record this
season and she currently ranks second in the NCAA with an 0.95 earned
run average. She is one of only three players nationally to have a
sub-1.00 earned run average.
Galati, who was the 2012 Colonial
Athletic Association (CAA) Pitcher of the Year and was a first team
all-conference selection at both pitcher and designated player, compiled
378 strikeouts in 2012 to bring her career total to a program record
1,018. Her 34 wins in 2012 are also a program record and her streak of
32 wins in a row this season fell one win shy of the NCAA single season
record. She leads the nation with 17 shutouts and ranks second in walks
allowed per seven innings and fifth in hits allowed per seven innings.
Her 378 strikeouts ranks fourth nationally.
One of the Pride's top hitters as
well, Galati was second on the team with a .345 batting average and had
four home runs and 37 runs batted in. She was second on the team in
batting average. Galati scored 35 runs and had 58 hits and 11 doubles.
