Northeastern Gets Walk-Off 5-4 Win Over UNCW
HARRISONBURG, Va. (May 24, 2013) – Pete Castoldi’s bases-loaded single to right gave fifth-seeded Northeastern a 5-4 walk-off victory over #1 UNCW in 11 innings at the CAA Baseball Championship on Friday night at Veterans Memorial Park.
It was the third straight win in an elimination game for the Huskies (31-25), who will face William & Mary at 1 p.m. on Saturday for a chance to advance to the CAA title game against unbeaten Towson. UNCW (37-21) was knocked out of the tournament, but will hope for an at-large berth to next week’s NCAA Championship.
NU’s Michael Foster walked to open the 11th before UNCW committed consecutive fielding errors on a groundball and a sacrifice bunt that loaded the bases. Castoldi then sent the game-winning hit over the right side of the Seahawks’ drawn-in infield.
Freshman left-hander James Mulry (3-3) picked up the victory for the Huskies after giving up just two hits over 4.1 innings of shutout relief. He escaped a bases-loaded jam in the seventh and struck out seven in an outstanding performance.
Justin Livengood (1-2) suffered the loss for the Seahawks despite giving up only a run on two hits over the final 2.2 innings and fanning six.
In a tournament that had been dominated by hitting, UNCW received a tremendous effort from starting pitcher Jordan Ramsey. The sophomore right-hander limited the Huskies to two runs on four hits over 7.0 innings. He struck out seven and walked only one, but didn’t get a decision despite leaving with a 4-2 lead.
Shortstop Jason Vosler drove in three of NU’s four runs, while outfielder Aaron Barbosa finished 2-for-4 and scored a pair of runs. For UNCW, outfielder Ryan LaGrange went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.
UNCW used the long ball to jump on top in the second. LaGrange drew a leadoff walk before sophomore designated hitter Corey Dick followed with a towering home run to right that made it 2-0. It was his eighth homer of the season.
The Seahawks tacked on two more in the fifth. Tyler Molinaro’s one-out single plated Terence Connelly and LaGrange followed with a sacrifice fly to right that brought in Luke Dunlap.
Northeastern finally broke through against Ramsey in the sixth. Aaron Barbosa singled to left before Vosler belted a two-run homer to right, cutting the Seahawks’ lead to 4-2.
The Huskies pulled even against the Seahawks’ bullpen in the eighth. Will Dougherty laced a leadoff single to right, Barbosa walked and Brad Burcroff singled to load the bases with none out against UNCW’s Kelly Secrest. Vosler’s deep drive to center plated Dougherty and allowed Barbosa to advance to third. Livengood came on for the Hawks and worked out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts, but not before a wild pitch allowed Barbosa to tie the contest at 4-4.
