CAA Has 11 Chosen In MLB Draft
Three CAA baseball players were selected on Day 2 of the 2012 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft on Tuesday afternoon and eight more were chosen on Wednesday.
George Mason pitcher Chris O'Grady was chosen with the 327th overall pick in the 10th round by the Los Angeles Angels, Hofstra outfielder Danny Poma was taken with the 333rd overall pick in the 10th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks and VCU pitcher Blake Hauser was selected with the 401st overall pick in the 13th round by the Seattle Mariners.
O'Grady went 2-0 with a sparkling 1.22 ERA and a CAA-best 14 saves this season. The left-hander, who earned first-team All-CAA honors as a relief pitcher, tied the Patriots' record for saves in a season and the total matched the third-most in league history. O'Grady was a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy and the NCBWA Stopper of the Year.
Poma earned first-team All-America accolades and was honored as the 2012 CAA Player of the Year. He batted a league-best .430 with a school-record 102 hits, a CAA-record 32 doubles and a league-high 78 runs scored. He also added seven home runs, 48 RBI's and 29 stolen bases. Poma currently leads the nation in doubles and runs, ranks second in batting average, third in hits, ninth in total bases (155) and fifth in on base percentage (.500).
After serving as a starting pitcher during his first two seasons at VCU, Hauser took over the closer role in 2012 and was 5-2 with 10 saves and a 3.03 ERA. The second-team All-CAA selection struck out 66 batters in 35.2 innings and limited the opposition to a .136 batting average. Hauser made 30 appearances out of the pen and his 10 saves are tied for the 5th-most in Rams' history.
Eight more CAA players were chosen on Wednesday. VCU pitcher Kyle Haynes was chosen in the 20th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates, Northeastern pitcher Andrew Leenhouts was picked in the 23rd round by San Francisco Giants and UNCW outfielder Andrew Cain was selected in 24th round by the San Francisco Giants.
In the 26th round, the Los Angeles Angels took UNCW pitcher Tyler DeLoach, Mason pitcher Brandon Kuter was tabbed in the 29th round by the Texas Rangers, Northeastern catcher Jon Leroux went in the 32nd round to the New York Mets, William & Mary pitcher Matt Davenport was picked in the 34th round by the Detroit Tigers and James Madison pitcher D.J. Brown was taken in the 39th round by the Cleveland Indians.
