CAA 4-1-1:

        •      The CAA teams opened the 2013-14 season with a 6-4 record, highlighted by James Madison earning a 63-46 home victory over Virginia in Harrisonburg and Drexel downing Toledo in the Rockets own Glass City Tournament.

        •      Eight of the nine CAA women’s basketball squads open up the 2013-14 season this weekend, while William & Mary will tip-off its season on Monday, Nov. 11.

        •      A number of strong individual performances during the opening weekend of the 2013-14 season.

        •      James Madison was voted the preseason favorite in the CAA, while Drexel, Northeastern and Towson followed among the top four.

        • James Madison senior guard Kirby Burkholder was voted CAA Preseason Player of the Year, by the league’s head coaches.

        •      The CAA welcomes the College of Charleston Cougars to the league for this season. 

        •      The league welcomes two new head coaches as Niki Reid Geckeler takes over the leadership of the Towson Tigers and Ed Swanson starts a new era at the helm of the William & Mary Tribe after 23 years at Sacred Heart.

        •      The CAA Women’s Basketball Championship will return to the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Maryland in 2014 for the fourth straight season.

        •      Two CAA teams (Delaware and James Madison) receive votes in the preseason Top 25 national polls, while three teams (UD, JMU and Drexel) are ranked among the Top 25 Mid-Major Poll. 


PLAYERS OF THE WEEK:

Kirby Burkholder • James Madison
Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby, Sr., Guard

Burkholder garners CAA Women’s Basketball Player of the Week after leading James Madison to a 63-46 victory over ACC foe Virginia in the Dukes’ home opener. The senior guard poured in a game-high 24 points to go along with a career-best 16 rebounds. Burkholder, 2013 CAA Preseason Player of the Year, made 10-of-12 free throws and added a block and a steal against the Cavaliers. She became the 26th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points with her fifth point of the game and finished the night with 1,019 career points. 
 

A’lece Mark • Northeastern
Springfield, Mass./Central, Jr., Guard

Mark earns CAA Women’s Basketball Player of the Week after scoring a career-best 28 points in Northeastern’s road victory over Boston University during the opening weekend of play. The junior guard lead all scorers while shooting 50.0 percent (9-of-18) from the floor, 57.1 percent (4-of-7) from three-point range and 75.0 percent (6-of-8) from the free throw line. Mark’s nine field goals made also marked a career best. She added five rebounds, two assists and one steal during her 39 minutes of play.

   

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK:

Shanice Johnson • Delaware
Chester, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara, Fr., Forward

Johnson earns CAA Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week honor after starting for the Blue Hens against Rhode Island and contributing 11 points in Delaware’s road victory. The rookie shot 57.1 percent from the field (4-for-7) during her debut and 50.0 percent from the free throw line (3-for-6). Johnson also added four rebounds and four steals during her 24 minutes of action for the Blue Hens.
