JMUís Smith, Weiss Selected as CAA Menís Golfers of the Week Ė Oct. 17

RICHMOND, Va. (October 17, 2013) – James Madison juniors Trey Smith and Jon Weiss earned CAA Men’s Golfers of the Week award after tying for 13th at the Donald Ross Intercollegiate this past week.

The two juniors led the JMU Dukes to a sixth place team finish on the par 70, 6,718-yard Mimosa Hills Country Club in Morganton, N.C.  Smith opened the tournament shooting one-over-par 71 before carding back-to-back 69’s to finish 1-under at 209. Smith has recorded a round in the 60’s five times this fall, increasing his career mark to 12 overall. Weiss, a transfer from Newberry College, scored 70-71-68—209 (-1), tying a season-low in the third round (68).

In other top golf news around the league, UNCW’s Payne McLeod and Trey Guy finished tied for 23rd at the Bank of Tennessee at Blackthorn with a score of 215. McLeod (74-67-74) carded a 67 in the second round, while Guy shot 71-69-75 for the event. The Seahawks finished ninth as a team.

Hofstra won the Jasper Invitational at the par 70, 6,432 yard Huntington Country Club. The Pride was led by Jake Winn and Paul Bruckner as they second place in the event shooting 74 (+4). Hofstra’s Luke Smith finished tied for fifth in the one-round event with a score of 75.
