JMU Earns Early Lead At CAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championship
FAIRFAX, Va. (Feb. 22, 2012) - With only one event on the docket in Wednesday's first day of action at the 2012 Virginia 529 CAA Swimming & Diving Championships, James Madison jumped to an early lead, with three Dukes finishing among the top four in the championship final of 3-meter diving.
JMU junior Kim Helfrich posted a score of 324.70 to soar to the top spot on the 3-meter board. She looks to become the first Dukes' diver in program history to sweep both diving golds, as the 1-meter portion is set for Friday.
Helfrich's teammate, senior Nicole Jotso earned runner-up honors with a score of 310.95 and Towson senior Jeanne Ball rounded out the top-three with a score of 290.85.
Dukes' freshman Alex Savage finished fourth with a score of 290.00, while Towson freshman Lyndsey Dickson scored a 285.65 to pick up fifth and teammate Lauren Ray took sixth with a score of 260.85.
James Madison's Emma Brown (242.90) and Old Dominion's Kelsey Thompson (238.50) finished seventh and eighth, respectively.
Championship action at George Mason's Jim McKay Natatorium in Fairfax, Va., resumes on Thursday with a stacked lineup that includes three individual events and two relays on both the men's and women's sides. The men's 1-meter diving competition is also slated to get underway tomorrow.
