McGrath Earns Academic All-America Honors
In addition to his national honor on Thursday, McGrath won Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards in both cross country and track and field this year from the Colonial Athletic Association. The Marlborough, N.H., native was also picked as a Fulbright Scholar for 2013-14, and will spend the next year in Russia. McGrath double-majored in international relations and global studies at the College, and became eligible for the Academic All-America ballot by being named to the Academic All-District first team early in June.
On the fields of competition, he also distinguished himself. In the fall, McGrath won the CAA individual title in cross country, breaking the course record established by Olympian Brian Hyde '96 in the process, and also earned All-Region honors at the Southeast Regional championships for the second year in a row. For those accomplishments, he was voted the CAA Athlete of the Year. Indoors, McGrath set personal-bests in both the mile and the 3,000m, the latter when he ran 8:05.72 to place fourth at the IC4A Championships. Outdoors, he was runner-up in both the 5,000m and 10,000m at the CAA Championships, and ran 13:55.37 for 5,000m at Mt. SAC to qualify for his third-straight NCAA Championships.
