Cooprider, Belaya Earn CAA Tennis Accolades
RICHMOND, Va. (April 25, 2013) – UNCW senior Chris Cooprider was selected as the Most Outstanding Performer at the CAA Men’s Tennis Championship and William & Mary junior Maria Belaya was chosen as the Most Outstanding Performer at the CAA Women’s Tennis Championship in a vote by the league’s coaches.
Cooprider posted a 2-0 record at No. 2 singles and a 2-0 mark at No. 1 doubles to help lead UNCW to its third CAA championship in the past five years. In singles, he rolled past Drexel’s Jeganathan Srinivasan, 6-0, 6-0, in the semifinals and beat William & Mary’s Will Juggins, 6-3, 6-1, in the finals.
Cooprider and partner Kosta Blank, who are ranked #28 nationally in doubles, topped Drexel’s Skyler Davis and Dan Koehler, 8-2, and defeated W&M’s Anton Andersson and Aaron Chaffee, 8-3. The Seahawks won both matches 4-0 to capture the CAA crown.
Cooprider was a first-team All-CAA selection in singles and doubles this season.
Belaya was 2-0 at No. 1 singles and 2-0 at No. 1 doubles as William & Mary claimed its league-record 22nd CAA women’s tennis title. In singles, she posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Delaware’s Danea Jonjic in the semifinals and downed UNCW’s Angie Sekely, 6-1, 6-2, in the finals.
Belaya and partner Leeza Nemchinov recorded an 8-2 win over the Blue Hens’ Nataliya Naumova and Christina Harrington and also defeated UNCW’s Olga Blank and Christine Kharkevich, 8-2. The Tribe won both matches 4-0.
Belaya was the 2013 CAA women’s tennis Player of the Year and was a first-team all-conference selection in singles and doubles. She is ranked #116 nationally in singles and #9 nationally in doubles with partner Jeltje Loomans.
