NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C., (Nov. 23, 2013) - Second-seeded Northeastern battled for a 3-0 sweep of third-seeded UNCW in the second semifinal match of the 2013 Colonial Athletic Association Volleyball Championship on Saturday at the North Charleston Convention Center in North Charleston, S.C.

Northeastern, making its fourth straight CAA Championship, and seventh overall, defeated UNCW twice during the regular season (3-0, 3-2) and now owns a perfect 16-0 all-time mark against the Seahawks. The Huskies kept their season alive and move on to the title game where they will face the tournament host and top-seed, College of Charleston on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

NU has appeared in two CAA title matches, but has yet to earn the league’s top spot outright. The Huskies, which will also look to win two matches in the same CAA tournament for the first time, were led by stud freshman Jamie Bredahl’s triple-double of 10 kills, 14 assists and 11 digs. Kelly Bacon provided a double-double with 12 kills and 12 blocks in the win.

UNCW secured the No. 3 seed with an 8-6 conference record and made its first appearance in the CAA Championship since 2000. The Seahawks, who defeated sixth-seeded William & Mary (3-1) in Friday’s quarterfinal, also ended the regular season in the top three of the league standings for the first time since 1989.

UNCW freshman Nicole Lott, who earned All-CAA second team and rookie honors, finished with 11 kills and five digs, while senior first-team All-CAA member Christi Laite had five kills in the setback.

Northeastern was the only team in the CAA this season to hand College of Charleston a loss, defeating the Cougars (3-2) on Nov. 10.

The Huskies hit a ridiculous .469 percent in the first set and set the tone early with a 7-2 lead. Lott provided some offense with three kills during a 9-5 run which brought the Seahawks within 12-11. That was the closest it got, however, as NU went on to easily win the set, 25-17.

In the second set, both teams showed just how well they matched up, as multiple points had to be earned following lengthy rallies.

The set went back and forth until the midway point, when Northeastern turned a 12-12 tie into 20-15 advantage. The Seahawks again threatened following a kill from Meredith Peacock that made it 23-20, but Bacon eventually closed out the action with back-to-back kills.

Facing the 2-0 deficit into the third, UNCW didn’t go down without a fight. The Seahawks continually answered NU’s attack, forcing a cornucopia of ties before a kill from Lott made it 24-23. The Huskies, though, finished out the match a couple of points later as Ava Cramp had a critical kill, then Nichole Kurz and Janelle Tucker teamed up for a block to end the match by a score of 27-25.
