2013 CAA Volleyball Championship Field Announced
RICHMOND, Va. (Nov. 17, 2013) - The field is set for the 2013 CAA Volleyball Championship, which will be hosted by CAA newcomer and top seed, College of Charleston. The Tournament will take place from November 22-24 in Charleston, S.C., at North Charleston Arena.
The regular-season race for the six-team championship field came down to the wire, though the top two seeds were impressively determined nearly one week ago, as the Cougars and second-seeded Northeastern combined to lose just four league games before the final weekend of play. The final four spots, held by UNCW, James Madison, Hofstra and William & Mary, weren’t determined until some of the final sets and matches concluded on Sunday afternoon.
The six-team event will open with quarterfinal action on Friday, November 22 as #5 Hofstra (16-14, 6-8 in CAA) faces #4 James Madison (13-14, 8-6 in CAA) at 4:00 p.m., followed by #6 William & Mary (11-20, 6-8 in CAA) against #3 UNCW (19-9, 8-6 in CAA) at 7:00 p.m.
In Saturday's semifinals, top-seeded CofC (23-5, 13-1 in CAA) takes on the Hofstra/James Madison winner at 1:00 p.m. Northeastern (18-10, 10-4 in CAA) meets the William & Mary/UNCW winner at 4:00 p.m.
The CAA title match will be played at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 24, with the winner earning the league's automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship Tournament.
College of Charleston is no stranger to the spotlight, having won either the regular season or conference tournament championship each of the last 12 years during its time in the Southern Conference, before its inaugural CAA campaign this season. The Cougars lost just once in CAA play this year (3-2) to Northeastern, but earned the tiebreaker over the Huskies based on percentage of sets won (5-4) over both matches played that were split this season.
It will be Northeastern's seventh tournament appearance in the last eight years and the Huskies will look to win their first CAA volleyball crown. Third-seeded UNCW returns to CAA postseason play, making its 17th overall appearance, and will also search for its first CAA title.
The Dukes of James Madison make their 26th CAA championship appearance, while Hofstra (9th) and William & Mary (24th) bring plenty of league postseason experience as well. The Pride captured the 2012 CAA volleyball title after defeating Delaware, 3-2.
