PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (November 13, 2013) – Hofstra senior forward Chris Griebsch was chosen as the 2013 Colonial Athletic Association men’s soccer Player of the Year in voting by the league’s head coaches. The award was presented Wednesday night on the eve of the semifinals of the CAA Men’s Soccer Championship in Philadelphia, Pa.

Also receiving top men’s soccer honors from the conference were William & Mary senior defender Will Smith as CAA Defensive Player of the Year, Delaware freshman forward Guillermo Delgado as CAA Rookie of the Year and Drexel’s Doug Hess as CAA Coach of the Year.

Griebsch was one of the top offensive performers in the CAA this season, ranking among the top three in the conference in goals, assists and points. The senior forward led the league in assists for the third year in a row with eight, and is the Pride’s all-time assists leader with 32. He also ranked third in the CAA with seven goals and 22 points. Griebsch contributed either a goal or an assist in 10 of the Pride’s 18 matches, including five of seven CAA contests. He was a third-team All-CAA selection in 2011 and a second-team All-CAA pick in 2012 before moving up to the first team this season. Griebsch is just the second Hofstra player to be honored as the CAA Player of the Year, joining Michael Todd in 2006.

Smith anchored a William & Mary defense that allowed a league-low 14 goals in 16 matches and recorded a CAA-best nine shutouts. The Tribe currently ranks seventh in the nation in shutout percentage (0.56) and 31st in goals against average (0.82). Smith also contributed one assist this season, which came on the game-winning goal in the Tribe’s 2-0 victory at Pittsburgh. Smith is the first W&M player to receive CAA Defensive Player of the Year accolades since Kevin Knott in 2000.

Delgado made a tremendous impact in his first season at Delaware, leading the CAA with 13 goals and 31 points. The freshman forward was also tied for fifth in the conference with five assists. Delgado recorded a goal or an assist in 14 of the Blue Hens’ 18 matches and he scored multiple goals three times. He currently ranks fifth in the nation in goals and is tied for fourth nationally in points. Those totals are the most of any freshman in Division I. Delgado is the second Blue Hens’ player in the last three years to be chosen as CAA Rookie of the Year, joining teammate Robero Gimenez (2011).

Hess earned CAA Coach of the Year honors for the second year in a row after guiding Drexel to its second consecutive regular-season title with a 4-1-2 conference record. The Dragons allowed only six goals in seven conference matches, which was the best in the CAA. Drexel has posted a 12-2-3 record in CAA regular-season play over the past two seasons under Hess. The Dragons will be the top seed and host for the semifinals and finals of the CAA Men’s Soccer Championship.

Six schools had at least one player selected to the All-CAA first team. Joining Griebsch from Hofstra was junior forward Maid Memic (10g, 3a), who ranked second in the CAA with 23 points. Smith and junior midfielder Marcus Luster (1a) made the squad from William & Mary, while Delgado and junior goalkeeper Borja Barbero (1.18 GAA, 5 ShO) represented Delaware.

Northeastern placed senior midfielder Dante Marini (6g, 5a) and junior defender Simon Cox (1a) on the All-CAA first team and Drexel had senior midfielders Nathan Page (5g, 3a) and Ken Tribbett (4g, 2a) chosen to the squad. Rounding out the selections was UNCW junior defender Jacob VanCompernolle (1g, 3a).
