RICHMOND, Va. (February 12, 2014) – The CAA has recognized six men’s and women’s tennis players for outstanding performances to start the spring season.

Delaware senior Troy Beneck (Wilmington, Del.) and the William & Mary duo of juniors Aaron Chaffee (Frisco, Texas) and Will Juggins (Lingfield, Surrey, United Kingdom) earned CAA men’s tennis honors. Receiving honors on the women’s side were William & Mary senior Maria Belaya (Melbourne, Fla.) and the Delaware tandem of senior Olivia Heim (Gibsonia, Pa.) and sophomore Nataliya Naumova (Moscow, Russia).

Beneck was selected as the CAA men’s tennis Player of the Week after starting the season with a 3-0 record at #1 singles for the Blue Hens. He defeated Howard’s William Jones, 6-2, 6-3, downed Loyola’s Connor Pietrak, 6-1, 6-0, and beat Quinnipiac’s Kei Ezaka, 6-2, 6-1. Beneck ranks third on Delaware’s all-time singles wins list with a career mark of 67-33. He also went 3-0 at #1 doubles to start the season with partner Adam Lawton.

Chaffee and Juggins were honored as the CAA men’s Doubles Team of the Week after posting a 5-2 record at #1 doubles. The pair posted back-to-back wins over opponents from the Big Ten as they knocked off Mihir Kumar and Sam Shropshire of #32 Northwestern, 6-3, and topped Russell Bader and Leonard Stakovsky of Penn State, 6-4.  The Tribe tandem also defeated St. John’s R.J. Belaya was named the CAA women’s tennis Player of the Week after winning four of her last five matches at #1 singles, including the last three in a row. The senior knocked off her fourth nationally ranked opponent of the year when she beat 58th-ranked Kenna Kilgo of Texas Tech, 6-4, 6-4. She helped the Tribe to a 5-2 win over #50 Penn State with a come-from-behind three-set win over Katia Blik, 4-6, 6-4, 10-4. The 2013 CAA Player of the Year also downed Andrea Retolaza of Wake Forest in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 10-4. Belaya is 17-9 overall on the season and is currently ranked No. 78 nationally.
