RICHMOND, Va. (December 12, 2013) – Northeastern sophomore Wesley Gallagher was selected as the 2013 Colonial Athletic Association men’s cross country Athlete of the Year in voting by the league’s head coaches.

Also earning top honors from the conference were William & Mary freshman Trevor Sleight as CAA men’s cross country Rookie of the Year and William & Mary’s Stephen Walsh as CAA men’s cross country Coach of the Year.

Gallagher was honored as the Most Outstanding Performer at the CAA Men’s Cross Country Championship after capturing the individual title with a time of 24:42.02 over the 8K course. His effort helped lead Northeastern to a second-place team finish, which was its best since joining the CAA in 2005. The sophomore posted a 24th-place finish at the 10K NCAA Northeast Regionals (30.46.5), which earned him an at-large invitation to the NCAA Men’s Cross Country Championship. Gallagher became just the third runner in NU history to compete at the national championship and finished 148th in the field of 253 runners with a time of 31:46.6 on the 10K course.

Earlier this season, Gallagher won the individual title at the Nassaney Invitational, finished seventh at the Br. John “Paddy” Doyle Meet of Champions and 11th at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown. He also placed third individually at the New England Championships, leading the Huskies to a second-place team finish that was the team’s best in the event since in the mid-1980’s. Gallagher is the second NU runner in the past three years to be chosen as the CAA Athlete of the Year, joining Eric Jenkins in 2011.

Sleight earned All-CAA honors after an impressive third-place finish in a time of 25:05.17 at the CAA Championship. He followed with a 44th-place effort at the NCAA Southeast Regionals with a 10K time of 30:26. Sleight also was 34th overall at the Panorama Farms Invitational and 138th overall the very competitive Pre-National Invitational. He was the Tribe’s second- best finisher in all but one of the events he competed in during the fall. It’s the seventh year in a row that a W&M runner has been selected as the conference’s Rookie of the Year.

Walsh was chosen as the Coach of the Year for the fourth consecutive year after guiding William & Mary to its 14th straight CAA championship. The Tribe had seven runners place among the top 11 individually at the conference meet. W&M went on to place sixth at the NCAA Southeast Regionals, finishing ahead of three higher-ranked squads.

The conference also announced its 2013 All-CAA team, which is made up of the top 12 finishers at the conference championship, and the CAA All-Academic team.
