RICHMOND, Va. (June 28, 2012) - George Mason junior Mandissa Marshall (Mountain Top, Pa.) was chosen as the 2012 CAA Female Athlete of the Year in track and field by a vote of the league's head coaches. Also receiving top track and field honors were VCU freshman Kiara Porter (Yorktown, Va.), who was selected as the CAA Rookie of the Year, and James Madison's Ta' Frias, who was voted CAA Coach of the Year.

Marshall captured the pole vault title at the CAA Championship for the second year in a row with a meet-record vault of 4.15 meters (13-7.25). The effort earned her Co-Most Outstanding Performer honors in the field events. Marshall went on to tie for first place at the NCAA East Region Qualifying competition with a jump of 4.10 meters (13-5.25), which earned her a berth in the NCAA Championship. Earlier this season, Marshall set a George Mason record in the pole vault by clearing 4.30 meters (14-1). She also captured the pole vault competition at the ECAC Outdoor Championship.

Porter was the CAA champion in the 400 meters with a school-record time of 53.24. She also was a member of the Rams' 4X100 relay team that captured a CAA title. Along with the two gold medals, Porter finished third in the 200 meters (24.16) at the conference championship and was part of VCU's 4X400 relay squad that placed second. She performed well at the NCAA East Region Qualifying competition, placing 15th in the 400m (53.28) and 18th in the 4X100 relay. Porter placed seventh in the 100 meters at the ECAC Outdoor Championship (11.89) and was fourth in the 400 meters at last week's USA Junior Outdoor Championships with a new school-record mark of 53.07.

Frias was selected as the CAA Coach of the Year in women's track and field for the first time after guiding James Madison to its first conference title. The Dukes scored 132 points to edge past VCU and Georgia State while capturing individual titles in six different events.
