JMU’s Thiagaraj Collects CAA Women’s Golfer of the Week Accolades – Oct. 2
RICHMOND, Va. (October 2, 2013) – James Madison sophomore Karishma Thiagaraj was awarded the CAA Women’s Golfer of the Week honor after earning her first top-five finish of her career at the UNCG Starmount Forest Classic.
Thiagaraj tied for fifth place at 4-over 217 after back-to-back rounds of 73 on the par 71, 6,265-yard Starmount Forest Country Club. She opened the tournament carding an even-par 71 despite a triple bogey on her final hole, as she also posted an eagle on the par-5 14th, four birdies and three bogeys in the round. Thiagaraj started four over through 10 holes, but came in with a pair of birdies and no bogeys in her final eight holes. The sophomore led the Dukes to a sixth-place team finish.
Among other noteworthy marks last week, William & Mary’s Kelly McGovern led the Tribe at the Penn State Nittany Lion Invitational. She finished tied for 11th overall at 224 (+8) carding 73-72-79 leading the W&M team to a seventh place finish on the par 72, 6,262-yard PSU Blue Couse. Her second round score of 72 was the third round of par or better so far this season for the freshman. She is already tied for the third-most par-or-better rounds in a career ever at W&M – three in one season is the second-best mark ever, behind only Morgan Stepanek’s four in 2009-10.
UNCW’s Lori Beth Adams also carded 224 (+11) while participating at the Windy City Collegiate Championship in Highland Park, Ill. The senior carded 73-77-74 earning a tied for 41st place on the par-71, 6,108-yard Northmoor Country Club course.
