UNCW Wins Men's Golf Championship, UD's Matthias Earns Medalist

WILMINGTON, Del. (April 29, 2012) - UNCW won its second straight CAA Men 's Golf Championship with a score of 884 after 54-holes. Delaware's Greg Matthias earned medalist honors with a three-day total of 217 (+4).

The Seahawks entered the final round in first place after opening the tournament in second after 18-holes. UNCW tabbed a three-day total of 301-295-288-884 (+32) at the Wilmington Country Club South Course. The Seahawks were followed by runner-up Georgia State (300-297-289--886), third place Old Dominion (307-290-306--903) and fourth place VCU (305-296-303--904).

George Mason finished in fifth place (308-292-305--905), William & Mary (310-297-306--907) and Delaware (312-289-306--907) finished in tied for sixth, and James Madison (306-303-303--912) earned eighth place.  Towson (314-308-299--921), Drexel (321-308-301--930) and Hofstra (321-309-305--935) rounded out the scoring of the championship.

Matthias, who finished the tournament 4-over par (72-68-77), tabbed his first career win and earned the league's automatic individual qualifer for the NCAA Regional Tournament. The senior also earned a spot on the CAA All-Tournament team. GSU's Davin White (77-72-69--218) and Tyler Gruca (77-71-73--221) along with Mason's Kevin Yerks (75-71-74--220), VCU's Marc Dobias (70-72-79--221) and UNCW's Thomas Bass (80-72-69--221) and Patrick Sawrey (76-73-72--221) earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team with a top five finish.

On Monday, May 7, the Seahawks and Matthias will learn their regional destinations. The NCAA Men's Golf Regionals are scheduled for May 17-19 in Greensboro, N.C., Athens, Ga., Ann Arbor, Mich., Norman, Okla., and Stanford, Calif.
