UNCW Two Shots Back from NCAA Championship, UD's Matthias Completes Round 2
UNCW and UD's Greg Matthias wrapped up the second round of their respective NCAA Men's Golf Regionals Friday afternoon.
UNCW managed to stay in contention despite a tough day to score and enters the
final round of the Athens Regional of the NCAA Championship in sixth place,
just two strokes behind 16th-ranked New Mexico for the final spot to advance to
the NCAA Championships in Los Angeles.
University of Delaware senior Greg Matthias
carded a nine over par 80 during his round on Friday at the NCAA Men's Golf Ann
Arbor Regional and sits in a tie for 72nd place following the second day of the
tournament.
In Athens, fourth-ranked Alabama (-8) was one of just two teams to finish the round par or better to stay in the lead and carry an 11-stroke lead into the final round. East Carolina also finished under par (-3) and is in second place.
The Seahawks, who carded a two-under-282 in the opening round, finished the second round 11-over. UNCW is two strokes behind New Mexico, but holds a one-stroke lead over Houston, Long Beach State and Wake Forest.
Payne McLeod (70-73=143) led the Seahawks for the second consecutive round and is tied for 20th on the leaderboard.
Posting counting scores for UNCW on the round were Thomas Bass (71-74=145), Patrick Sawrey (71-74=145) and Stefan Brewer (80-74=154). Bass and Sawrey are tied for 30th while Ryan Nagy (70-76=143) and Brewer are tied for 44th and 68th, respectively.
Matthias, who fired a seven over par 78 on Thursday on the par 71, 6,723-yard
University of Michigan Golf Course, is at 78-80-158, 16 over par, heading into
Saturday's final round.
Matthias opened Friday's round with a par on the 10th hole, but a double bogey
on 11 and a bogey on 13 moved him to three over for the day. He rebounded to
par the next four holes, but a triple bogey on 18 dropped him to a six over 41
through the back nine.
Matthias then parred the first hole, and after a bogey on 2, recorded three
consecutive pars. Following bogeys on 6 and 7, he closed his round with a pair
of pars to finish the front nine at three over par 39.
