GSU's Lorentzen Fourth After Two Rounds, UNCW in 22nd
Georgia State golfer Charlotte Lorentzen fired a two-under par 70 Friday to move into a tie for fourth place after two rounds of play at the NCAA East Regional at the Penn State Blue Course in State College, Pa. The UNCW women's golf team turned in a team-total 322 on Friday and remained in 22nd place after 36 holes of the 2012 NCAA Women's golf Central Regional on the Scarlet Course of the Ohio State Golf Club.
Lorentzen, the senior from Soroe, Denmark, has a 36-hole total of even-par 144 on the par-72, 6,253-yard layout. Entering the final round, she is tied with Natalie Wille of Augusta State, four strokes behind leader Katerina Ruzickova of Texas A&M (140, -4), which stands fourth in the team standings. Katie Burnett and Justine Dreher, both of team leader South Carolina, are tied for second at one-under 141.
Playing as an individual, Lorentzen is scheduled to tee off at 8:25 a.m. for Saturday's final 18 holes as she seeks to advance to the NCAA Championship finals. The top eight teams, plus the top two individuals not on one of those eight teams will advance to play for the NCAA title, May 22-25 at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn.
Starting on the back nine, Lorentzen got off to a hot start with birdies on three of her first four holes. After a bogey on 17, she made the turn at two-under. She sandwiched bogeys on four and six around a birdie on five, and then she finished her round with a birdie on the par-four ninth hole.
The Seahawks have combined for a two-round total of 323-322=654, two shots back of Texas-San Antonio (317-326=643) and just six strokes off the pace of in-state rival East Carolina (329-310=639).
No. 3 Southern California expanded its lead over the field on Friday after combining for a two-over-par result of 290 to take a 12-shot lead with a 36-hole result of 298-290=598. No. 10 Vanderbilt (308-292=600) moved into second place with a four-over-par score on Friday while No. 27 Virginia (308-296=604) took over third. No. 33 Purdue (301-307=608) and No. 21 Oregon (308-300=608) are tied for fourth.
Sophomore Laverry Kumar carded a four-over par 76 in the second round to claim a share of 47th place with an 80-76=156 scorecard after two rounds. Senior Sofia Hagsund is three strokes back of Kumar with a 78-81=159 total and finds herself part of a deadlock for 67th. Sophomores Lori Beth Adams (82-82=164/T-104th) and Jeanne Metivier (83-83=166/T-109th) and senior Alei Mitchell (88-86=174/124th) complete UNCW's entry.
USC's Lisa McCloskey posted a four-under-par 68 and jumped to the top of the individual leader board with a three-under-par tournament total of 73-68=141. Florida State's Maria Salinas (71-72=143) and Vanderbilt teammates Lauren Stratton (75-68=143) and Marina Alex (70-73=143) are two strokes off the lead at one-under-par heading into Saturday's final round.Final round action at the Central Regional begins Saturday at 8 a.m. UNCW will open the final round at 1:25 p.m. on the No. 10 tee.
