Squash Smarts combines the sport of squash with daily academic tutoring to benefit under-served, urban youth to develop academic and athletic achievement. Squash Smarts is the third major urban youth program nationwide to combine the sport of squash with academic tutoring and mentoring for low-income middle school students in order to enhance academic achievement while fostering life skills and developing fitness.
Drexel University Athletics is the home of Squash Smarts enabling them to provide daily squash instruction and academic tutoring sessions. Squash Smarts participants are paired with a Drexel student-athlete mentor. Additional undergraduates from the university serve as tutors. In addition to its squash and academic sessions, participants in the program take part in other various activities throughout the year like National Student-Athlete Day in May, designed to celebrate sportsmanship and life skills acquired through sport. Recently, Squash Smarts participants received rowing lessons from Drexel Crew student-athletes at the boat house and on the river.
